Gilli Slater
At the beginning of her career Gilli trained in Textiles and Education at Winchester. Now retired from teaching she is able to pursue a more artistic path. She has developed a unique style using Brusho dye and wrinkled silk to create imaginative recollections of the limestone landscape in which she lives.
She has a special affinity with trees, their gnarled textures and colours and the mossy rocks found in her local woodland. Those viewers of an imaginative disposition will often find the spirits of the woodland have crept into Gilli’s pictures. The pictures evolve organically as the dye bleeds into the wet silk and she waits for the magic to happen. Sometimes she adds collage and foils to enhance the work.
Gilli also creates greeting cards and notebooks using her own lino cuts, printed on fabric, enhanced with brusho dye. The ways the jewel bright colours of the dye bleed into the fabric never cease to surprise her.
